Another Hungarian animation is heading to Berlin: Janka Feiner’s diploma film, Fire in My Pocket, has been selected for the Generation Kplus competition programme at the Berlin International Film Festival. The nearly 10-minute film was created on the Animation MA programme of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, with the support of the National Film Institute Hungary. Set in a magical mushroom realm it opens a window onto children’s inner emotional lives, impressing the Berlinale selection committee with its blend of stop-motion with digital drawing animation.
At this year’s Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, Mihály Schwechtje’s upcoming feature Hairpin Turn Driving School was presented in the Eastern Promises section. The programme, which spotlights Central European co-productions, awarded the Marché du Film Producers Network Special Prize to the project’s producer, MOME Art and Design Management alumna Genovéva Petrovits. The award comes with an invitation to attend next year’s Cannes Film Festival as an official guest.
This year’s graduation ceremony celebrated the present and future of the university, the true MOME identity and the power of dreams. 320 students received their diplomas, and the day also saw the launch of new traditions that added depth to MOME’s most cherished event. Held at the RaM-ArT Theatre, the ceremony honoured recipients of the Rector’s Special Awards, alumni with milestone anniversaries, and the winners of the Wartha Award and the Award for Ethical Behaviour in Architecture.
Three MOME graduation films are competing at the Fresh Meat International Short Film Festival in Budapest: Wish You Were Ear by Mirjana Balogh, The Last Drop by Anna Tőkés, and Glasshouse by Kata Sárdi. Fresh Meat is the first festival in Hungary to be Oscar-qualifying, meaning winners in certain categories automatically gain eligibility for the prestigious award.
Elite sport, ambition, tension, and extreme mental and physical strain – these are the central themes explored in The Last Drop, a gripping animated short by Anna Tőkés. The film has been shortlisted for the graduation film category at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, one of the most prestigious showcases for animation worldwide. This year, the festival is paying tribute to Hungarian animation, shining the light on the country’s vibrant film industry, artists, studios, and schools.
The winners of the eighth ArtHungry Award in the Product Design category include several former MOME students, such as Máté Guthy, Róbert Kristóffy, and Nóra Szilágyi for their ‘At Least’ home workout bench, and Márk Dávid for his ‘Puritaan – 03’ collection. The main prize in this category went to MAIII COLLECTIVE for its Fragments collection, which debuted at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair. In the Graphic Design category, Nóra Kaszanyi also received a main prize for her album and exhibition design ‘Biedermeier Lifestyles. Art and the Rise of the Middle Classes in 19th-Century Hungary (1815–1867)’. The awards were presented on 6 March at a ceremony held at Deák Palace in Budapest, which also marked the opening of a pop-up exhibition featuring the finalist projects.
In a remarkable achievement, Wish You Were Ear, an animated diploma film from MOME’s Animation department, has won the prestigious Crystal Bear for Best Short Film at this year’s Berlinale. Sponsored by the National Film Institute (NFI), the film was lauded by the Berlinale Generation 14+ jury for its poignant reminder of how communication, mutual respect, and understanding are essential to human existence, no matter how varied our individual experiences may be. The award was presented on Friday evening at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival to Balogh, a MOME graduate from the class of 2024.
Every object carries a story, but do minimalist contemporary furniture pieces also tell a story, and if so, what is it? This question is explored by the Fragments collection making its debut at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, one of the largest furniture exhibitions in the world. The artists behind this collection are the members of the MAIII Collective, a group of recent graduates from the MOME Product Design master's programme. Their narrative objects will be featured in the Greenhouse section, which provides a platform for emerging designers to showcase their work.
Another triumph: MOME diploma film competes at the Berlinale! Mirjána Balogh’s animation Wish You Were Ear will represent Hungary at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival, one of the world’s most prestigious film festivals, which begins on 13 February. Created in 2024 as a diploma film at the Animation programme of Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), with support from the National Film Institute (NFI), the film will make its international debut in the Generation 14+ programme. Selected from thousands of entries, this thought-provoking animation explores how romantic relationships leave lasting impressions on our sense of self.
The winners of the 2024 Ezüstgerely Art Competition included several MOME alumni. Graphic Design alumna Beáta Bencsik shared first place in the Graphic Art category, while Media Design alumna Violetta Vigh took the top prize in the Installation category. Organised by the National Sports Agency, this long-standing award dating back decades celebrates the intersection of sport and art, offering significant cash prizes.
“A piece from which its owner can draw strength" – this is how designer Bálint Szalai described the new Highlights of Hungary award trophy, co-designed with fellow designer Adrienn Király as the prestigious event marks the beginning of its second decade this year. This year’s recipients were the first to hold the new trophy, while the Kreatív Magazine special award was presented to MOME senior lecturer and designer of the Your Nature collection Apol Temesi. All three designers are proud MOME alumni who remain closely connected to their alma mater.
Arts Thread, the leading digital platform for emerging designers and artists, is organising the 5th Global Creative Graduate Showcase, which lists the most exciting diploma projects of art and design graduates from all over the world. This year over 5000 students uploaded their diploma projects. The independent expert panel of Arts Thread created the shortlist, and it is now the audience’s turn to vote. The 2024 shortlist includes 11 fresh MOME graduates!
Elle magazine is organising the third ELLE Decoration International Design Awards Hungary (EDIDA) event to celebrate outstanding Hungarian designers. This year there are many MOME alumni on the shortlist once again, in the ‘Young Designer of the Year’, ‘Product of the Year’, ‘Brand of the Year’ and ‘Sustainable Initiative of the Year’ categories.
How can design respond to the complex challenges of our time? What methods can be used to preserve traditional knowledge while embracing cutting-edge technological advancements? The Challenging Future exhibition in London, showcasing the most outstanding diploma projects from MOME, seeks to answer these fundamental questions and reflects the university’s mission to address the most pressing issues of the 21st century through a synthesis of design-based education, research, and practical expertise.

Q&Alumni

The next episode of our Q&Alumni series has arrived! – This time, we sat down with Anna Rubi, MOME Media Design alumna. Anna is one of Hungary’s leading media artists, whose outstanding work has earned her numerous recognitions throughout her career – including the MOME Best of Media Design Award this June, granted by the department in acknowledgement of her exceptional artistic achievements. In our conversation, she shared her experiences from her university years, reflected on what MOME has given her, and talked about her award-winning documentary ‘Life Without You’. Anna also discussed why she considers creative block to be a kind of “luxury.”
In the newest instalment of our Q&Alumni series, you can get to know Boldizsár Mátyás and Mátyás Czél, media designers who are working in Budapest with their own design studios. They both graduated from MOME and after several successful collaborations, they founded POV Budapest, the first international design and visual arts conference in Hungary. Now the conference is much bigger and more ambitious, and Boldi and Matyi are both running their own design studios. They talked to us about their time at MOME, the beggining of their partnership and also what the future entails.
Every dress has a story, just like every MOME alumni has theirs – in this episode of the Q&Alumni series, we talked with Anita Korn about her journey! Anita arrived in MOME with a background in television and graduated in 2017 with an Art and Design Management MA degree. She told us about how a new world had opened to her coming to the university and what impacted her views here. And of course we spoke about what inspired her famous web-series, Ruhastory.
In the next instalment of our Q&Alumni series, we spoke with Ádám Tóth, who graduated from MOME in 2018 as a product designer. After his active university years, Ádám founded Malom Projekt, a design studio focusing on product development and interior design, experimenting with the reuse of plastics and natural materials, while also running creative workshops. He has collaborated with MOME on several projects, including the Művészetek Völgye Pavilion, completed last year, which will once again welcome visitors this year in Kapolcs at the MOME × Harcsa Veronika courtyard. Ádám told us about this project – and many others – in our conversation.
Nóra Demeczky is a familiar name in the design world – not just to the MOME community, but far beyond. Since graduating with a degree in Graphic Design in 2015, she has gone on to co-found the acclaimed design agency DE_FORM. Their work pops up time and again, spanning institutions and events from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences to the Inota Festival, and the Light Art Museum. Her hand is clearly visible at MOME too, where she’s taught courses, contributed to several communications projects, and still returns regularly for talks and community events. In this interview, she shares stories from her university years, the connections that shaped her life, her dream collaborators, and what DE_FORM is working on right now.
In the first written feature of our Q&Alumni series, we spoke with jewellery designer Patrícia Harsány, a 2021 graduate of the MOME Jewellery and Metal Design MA programme. She shared her reflections on student life – from the vibrancy of life in the halls of residence and the warmth of university communities to collaborative projects that still influence her practice today. Since graduating, Patrícia has remained an active contributor to both her field and the life of the university, with projects spanning from Milan to Zugligeti Road. We caught up with her to hear more about those adventures – and what continues to inspire her.
The first guest of the Q&Alumniof series is Anna Tőkés, MOME Animation alumna, who has recently participated in the Annecy International Animation Film Festival with her diploma film titled “The Last Drop.” In this episode, you can learn more about Anna’s experience at our university, her favourite memories of her time spent on campus, and even about her secret talents.
