DESIGN CURVES: Vectors for the future – The recipients of the Stefan Lengyel Scholarship of Excellence 2022/23 are making a debut

In the 2022/2023 academic year, 32 students have received the Stefan Lengyel Scholarship of Excellence. They all share a mindset of regarding design as a ubiquitous force driving change in every walk of life rather than a commercial tool for following clients’ instructions. An exhibition of their works will open on 4 November at MOME Ground.

The Stefan Lengyel Scholarship of Excellence programme was launched by the Foundation for Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in autumn 2020 to provide a merit-based professional support to students with outstanding projects and further development concepts. The works featured here are experimental concepts and research that could be taken further in a number of ways.

The students of this year’s exhibition are open to collaboration, design for both local and global issues, and take on various roles, including that of researcher, activist or manager, in order to be able to respond optimally to today’s challenges.

The works explore a variety of current topics including safe cities, inclusive design, contemporary taboos, the future of materials, the protection of the ecosystem, human-machine interactions, and innovative ways to uphold cultural values.

Working at the intersection of fiction and documentary, and stage and background, German film and video artist Julian Rosefeldt combines cinematography, architecture, theatre and literature in his installations. Particularly interested in the relationship between stage and background, the visible and the hidden, the original and the imitation, his films not only evoke social narratives but also reflect on the moving image itself being an archive, a factory of myths and an experimental space.

No designer wants their work to contribute to the erosion of human relationships, the destruction of the planet, or the growth of social inequality. But how can they find their place in a consumer society?

„Global society has not yet understood the distinction between physical expansion and qualitative development. It has passed the stage where more physical expansion is desirable. No widely-shared global goal is now served by having more people or material goods. Now it is important to learn how to advance the development of our species - achieving equity, peace, psychological balance, physical health, environmental quality.” (Dennis Meadows, co-author of Limits to Growth)
