With profound sorrow, we say goodbye to Nikoletta Lakatos

Date: 2026.04.07
With profound sorrow, we say goodbye to Chief of Cabinet to the Rector Nikoletta Lakatos, who passed away at the age of barely 40 after a sudden and aggressive illness. Her career was cut tragically short, yet its impact far exceeded the time she had, and it is hard to accept that someone who brought such warmth and vitality is no longer here with us.

Niki was someone whose presence brightened everyday life for those around her. We couldn’t help but be uplifted by her energy, smile, natural optimism, and quiet positivity. She had a way of making things feel lighter. Being around her, it was easier to breathe and easier to believe that things will turn out well. She approached others with an instinctive sensitivity that put us at ease, at work and in the community. The way she was present in the MOME community, both as a person and as a professional, was something we all deeply valued.

She joined the university in April 2025 as Head of the Rector’s Office. Alongside her role at MOME, and already before joining, she played a vital role in Budapest’s Roma public and cultural life as Operations Manager at Bura Gallery. Earlier in her career, she worked as a freelance project manager, coach, and trainer, contributing to a wide range of non-governmental, cultural, and community initiatives. A significant part of her professional life was spent at Hello Wood, where over nearly a decade she held roles as Office Manager, Project Manager and Operations Manager, while also taking on substantial responsibility across finance, HR, and organisational development.

As the 1Magyarország Association, which she founded, put it, “Nikoletta’s quiet but powerful presence was rooted in immense dedication and hard work. She sought meaning rather than visibility, and real impact rather than performance. She was there for causes that went beyond any single project – working with communities, supporting the stories behind them, and taking responsibility for how they are remembered.”

We will hold her in loving memory, with gratitude and deep respect.
