Material Inquiry — material research, experimental studies

The third important unit of the programme is the Material Inquiry module, which is one of the basic pillars of sustainable object design. The aim of the sequential design tasks is for students to have achieved, by the end of the course, a wide spectrum of knowledge on possible materials and how to work with them. In this design approach, extensive exploration of raw materials (both those that are well known and those that have unharnessed potential) is intertwined with the process of object creation. In the Compo course starting in the second semester, students can deepen their understanding of the methods of and approach to material-oriented design, thus gaining theoretical and practical knowledge on the perspective of material experimentation, which is essential for any responsible designer. DLA materials researcher Apol Temesi is professional lead for the Material Inquiry module.
