He is also a painter. He graduated from the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, where he worked alongside his mentor, Pál Gerzson as an assistant lecturer between 1986 and 1995. In 1998, as a senior lecturer, he was appointed studio manager in the system of independent drawing studios. In 2000, when the educational structure was being restructured, former Head of Department, Ferencz István, appointed him head of the drawing studio of the Department of Architecture. Since 2002, he has also taught chromatics. He obtained his doctorate (DLA) in 2008. He has been an associate professor since 2013, and he became habilitated in 2020. The main principle of his teaching method is for students to be aided by the experiences and skills acquired through drawing exercises throughout the architectural design process. He is currently the head of the drawing studio at MOME Institute of Architecture.

Biography

Márton Magyari, painter and associate professor
Márton Magyari was born in 1958 in Budapest, Hungary. He graduated from Lovassy László High School in Veszprém in 1976. Between 1976 and 1978, he trained as an inlay maker, and in 1978, he was admitted to the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts (now University). He graduated as a painter in 1983. His mentor was Pál Gerzson. He completed a two-year postgraduate programme between 1983 and 1985. In 1987, his former mentor, Pál Gerzson, invited him to become his assistant lecturer. He taught at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts until 1996. In 1998, he was admitted to the Hungarian University of Applied Arts (the predecessor of MOME). In 2000, István Ferencz appointed him as head of the drawing studio at the Institute of Architecture (then Department). He was also responsible for the development of the studio’s curriculum. He taught chromatics at the institution from 2002. Between 2002 and 2004, he was a student at the MOME Doctoral School, where he obtained his DLA in 2008. In 2010, he became a non-academic public member of the Hungarian Academy of Arts. He was appointed associate professor in 2013, and he became habilitated in 2020.

He is a member of the National Association of Hungarian Artists, the Society of Hungarian Painters and the Association of Hungarian Fine and Applied Artists. He has been awarded the Herman Lipót Prize, the Barcsay Prize and the City of Veszprém Prize. In 1993, as part of a scholarship from the Foundation Samuel Buffat, he spent six months in Geneva, and in 2017, he was awarded a scholarship by the Hungarian Academy in Rome.

As a committed environmentalist, and he served as a trustee of the Göncöl Society, Hungary's leading environmental foundation, for ten years.
He is a well-known figure in the contemporary Hungarian art scene and has been involved in numerous solo and important group exhibitions.
