Beyond the season – the MOME Fashion Show champions responsible design

What does it mean to be a responsible fashion designer, and what role does education play in this regard? What influences are most apparent in the work of the latest generation of designers? Each year, the Fashion and Textile Design programme at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) hosts a Fashion Show, showcasing the work of its graduating students and alumni which not only hold aesthetic value but also convey powerful social and cultural messages. This time, the entire visual concept of the show was designed by students, while the alumni community is represented by the latest collection of the THEFOUR brand, which has recently opened their own store.

Like the previous events, this year’s edition also provides insight into what drives the fashion designers of the future and how they think about sustainability, inclusivity, and the relationship between tradition and contemporary trends. The theme for this year’s BA graduate collections is “Message Recorder”, involving the use of fashion, textiles, and costumes as tools to explore deeper social and cultural issues, as well as to reinterpret personal and collective identities.  

Sustainability plays a significant role in nearly all of the projects, with students exploring alternatives to the fashion industry’s unsustainable practices by using recyclable, recycled, and biodegradable materials, alongside ecologically conscious production methods. Digital design enhancing inclusivity, functionality, and personalisation, as well as experimentation with smart textiles and augmented reality are also major focuses. 

The innovative visual design for the 2024 MOME Fashion Show was developed as part of a course involving students from various programmes under the direction of Head of the Product Design BA programme Dorottya Féja, and Fashion and Textile Design MA teacher Csenge Vass, with support from professionals experienced in organising and managing fashion shows. The visual design of the runway, venue, and installation elements for the accompanying exhibition all emerged from this collaborative process, with sustainability and practicality as key considerations in creating the visuals and overall concept to align with the theme of “circularity”.   

This unique, regionally outstanding fashion event led by Head of the MA Fashion and Textile Design programme at MOME and co-founder of KELE Clothing and BOO Studio Ildikó Kele alongside textile designer and teacher and founder of the VYF scarf brand Viola Balázs will be held this autumn, in sync with international fashion weeks.   

“Our educational approach places special emphasis on fostering responsible design thinking, which is based on the harmonious integration of craftsmanship, digital technologies, and scientific research. MOME’s recent graduates are not only shaping the future of the fashion and textile industry but are also the contemporary cultural dialogue. Their work, while aesthetically compelling, raises deep and often provocative questions, reflecting the dilemmas of the present and the possibilities of the future. Embodying the highest standards of the field, they explore the unlimited possibilities within fashion and boldly and consciously confront the challenges of the 21st century, working towards a more sustainable and empathetic future”, said Ildikó Kele, summarising the programme’s ethos. 

On 3 October, the grand fashion show will feature collections by 11 BA and 1 MA students, including Hanga Beöthy Kiss, Liza Borcsik, Sára Dimák, Nóra Frankó, Orsolya Gerencsér, Gergő Ghete, Noémi Horváth, Nóra Keresztes, Náda Krausz, Karina Kürti, Csenge László, Regina Nagy, Kamilla Dorottya Pomykala, Barnabás Sonnevend, Janka Bella Szabó, Anna Winkler, Boglárka Bakos, Csenge Diviki-Nagy, Nóra Gulya, Fanni Huszár, Fanni László, Boglárka Pitenyák, Lala Tóth, Emese Zubornyák. The accompanying exhibition on 30 September - 6 October will showcase the works of 8 BA and 7 MA students, as well as one student from the Doctoral School.  

Kormos Zsófia’s doctoral project, Artemis, is a groundbreaking smart garment designed to alleviate menstrual pain. It significantly reduces the often-intolerable pain associated with periods through three tools: a stylish body suit equipped with clinically proven integrated technologies, a removable device, and a mobile app. 

This year, Anett Gálvölgyi and Márton Miovác will represent the MOME alumni with the latest collection of their brand THEFOUR. Their independent fashion brand, which recently opened a store on Lázár Street behind the Opera House, boldly blends multicultural influences with modern streetwear. The SS25 collection creates a world where fashion is not just about aesthetics but a powerful expression of personal strength and identity. With an emphasis on a subtle yet striking appearance, the new collection stays true to the brand’s core values: offering thoughtfully designed, light, and outspoken pieces that embrace a spirit of constant rebellion. 

☞ MOME’s Fashion and Textile Design MA programme and its predecessor have been training outstanding professionals for over a century, many of whom receive international accolades and go on to become sought-after designers.  

The alumni of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design include acclaimed textile and fashion industry professionals such as Noémi Ferenczy, Barbara Léber, Bori Tóth, Anikó Manier Németh, Dóra Konsánszky, Réka Vágó, Emília Anda, András Tóth, Attila Godena-Juhász and Eszter Füzes, Dalma Dévényi, Tibor Kiss – and the list goes on. After graduation, MOME students often go on to secure positions with leading global brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Chloé, Balenciaga, Vetements, Acne Studios, Proenza Schouler, Marc Cain, Adidas, Nike, Burton, and The North Face, as well as prominent Hungarian brands like Nanushka, Aeron, Nubu, Tomcsányi, and TheFour.  

The exclusive show will be held on 3 October 2024 on the MOME Campus (1121 Zugligeti út 9.), providing an opportunity to visit one of Central and Eastern Europe’s most significant and state-of-the-art creative industry universities.

The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) continues its forest-planting initiative, with MOME students and staff planting a new forest in the Vízvár area in collaboration with experts from the Danube-Drava National Park on 14 to 16 November. The action will be preceded by professional events at MOME’s Budapest Campus, starting on 12 November with a lecture by biomimicry researcher Yael Helfman-Cohen from Tel Aviv, followed by biologist and Head of WWF Hungary’s Forest Programme Dr. László Gálhidy on 13 November.

Celebrated graphic artist and designer of the iconic Zoom, István Bányai was a defining figure in the history of press and magazines. Known for his work with The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, New York, and Playboy, he would have turned 75 this year. To honour his legacy, his alma mater, the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), will present a selection of his work in an exhibition this November, offering a contemporary perspective on his oeuvre for the first time in Hungary.

“A piece from which its owner can draw strength" – this is how designer Bálint Szalai described the new Highlights of Hungary award trophy, co-designed with fellow designer Adrienn Király as the prestigious event marks the beginning of its second decade this year. This year’s recipients were the first to hold the new trophy, while the Kreatív Magazine special award was presented to MOME senior lecturer and designer of the Your Nature collection Apol Temesi. All three designers are proud MOME alumni who remain closely connected to their alma mater.
