This research project explores how scientific organizations can use co-design and data storytelling to effectively communicate complex information to non-expert audiences. Addressing a critical gap in science communication, it focuses on developing innovative methods and tools for making data-driven narratives both accessible and engaging, while ensuring accuracy and resonance with diverse stakeholders.

This project addresses a critical issue in today’s data-driven world: how can scientists make complex data understandable to the general public? We live in an era where understanding and interpreting data is increasingly important. Data visualization, the art of representing data in visual formats like charts and graphs, plays a pivotal role in this. It can significantly aid in demystifying scientific information. Data storytelling techniques can weave data into compelling narratives that clarify and contextualize scientific findings. The research focuses on developing innovative, user-friendly methods for scientists to communicate their findings.

Despite existing guidelines on data communication, many in the scientific community still struggle to convey their complex results to those without a scientific background. The aim is to bridge this gap, making scientific data not only more accessible but also engaging for everyone. We plan to integrate co-design in our approach, a collaborative method that involves both scientists and diverse public groups in the creation process. This strategy ensures that our solutions resonate with a wider audience. Ultimately, our goal is to transform science communication, making it more inclusive and impactful for all. 

Project phases

Co-creation Tool Design

Nov 2023 – Jan 2024

This phase involves conducting an extensive literature review and developing physical co-creation tools, such as cards and sheets, for collaborative data storytelling.

Workshops & Prototype

Feb 2024 – Jun 2024

Focusing on planning and organizing co-design workshops, including the first case study with HUN-REN Centre for Energy Research. This phase also includes the development and initial testing of data storytelling prototypes in various case studies.

Evaluation & Dissemination

Jul 2024 – Dec 2024

Carrying out elicitation interviews and evaluations of the workshops and prototypes. This final phase emphasizes the analysis of collected data, refinement of methodologies, publication writing, and dissemination of findings to highlight the efficacy of co-design in scientific communication.
