With visual activism for a better world

Date: 2024.04.19
As new wars break out, species die out, the planet warms, glaciers melt, forests disappear, and humanity is slowly threatened with mass extinction. We can personally observe how the natural environment, formed over millions of years, is completely transformed by the influence of the last two hundred years. How can photography and the visual arts respond to the crisis appearing on several fronts? Krzysztof Candrowicz, an interdisciplinary curator, sociologist, researcher, and activist, was a guest of the Photography MA course and gave a lecture on this in the spring semester of 2024, between April 2-5.

On April 2, the artist shared his educational experiences with the instructors with the help of his international network of contacts for the first time. After that, he held personal consultations for the students the next day, where he viewed their portfolios, then gave several valuable feedback from the point of view of their careers.

Candrowicz held a lecture entitled "Visual Activism" on April 4, starting at 3 p.m. The presentation was about artistic involvement, which uses the power of images to inspire social and political changes. Because this dynamic medium transcends traditional boundaries, it more easily engages a wide variety of audiences. Visual activism - be it impactful photography, thought-provoking street art, films, or video art - has a remarkable ability to amplify marginalized voices, highlight injustices, and challenge prevailing norms. After the thought-provoking presentation of the Polish curator, he also answered the questions that arose.

The presentation was supported by the Wacław Felczak Foundation.
