Biography

Mary is a Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design researcher. She is interested in designing and studying the ways data-driven designs might shape how different audiences engage with scientific information, with the aim of crafting more sustainable futures. She holds a PhD in HCI from the Design Department of Aalto University where she was advised by Andres Lucero. Her PhD followed her involvement in an EU-funded project with a focus on Fostering Urban food System Transformation through Innovative Living Labs Implementation, supervised by Prof. Danielle Wilde. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed publications at venues including ACM CHI, DIS, MUM and IEEE. Her current research focuses on meaningful data representations for change (mrFc). The term encapsulates the idea that to be transformative, representations of data must involve different audiences' in their design and implementation and should be envisioned as an integrated part of quotidian life. Data storytelling and an aim for data literacy, which are key factors in humanising the impact of climate change and making data more relatable and actionable for non-experts, are core aspects of mrFc.
