Sustastic Effects

This research-intensive project experiments with new sustainable materials as potential alternatives to plastic yarns that are harmful to the ecosystem and the environment. Effect yarns used in knitted fabrics are often derived from non-renewable, environmentally harmful petroleum products. By blending science and art, biodesign offers an innovative approach to creating new products.
Project Sustastic Effects has produced a catalogue of over 100 experimental bioeffect yarn varieties, made from alginate and other natural, eco-friendly sources, showcased through various knitted patterns. The colours were achieved by dyeing the yarns with spices, juices made from kitchen waste, vegetable powders, and algae, while effects were created by incorporating mica or poppy seed, or through physical transformation. The result is a visually vibrant, striking, and extravagant alternative material.
