Wish you were ear

How do relationships (de)form our self-image?
Project overview
Animated short film exploring self-image in the context of the impact of relationships on individuals

Mirjána Balogh: Wish You Were Ear
Supervisor: Júlia Farkas
Consultant: Zsuzsanna Kreif

This animated short film reflects on how individuals in a relationship, whether intentionally or not, shape and transform each other through their presence. Even when a relationship ends, the changes that occur during their time together become an intrinsic part of both individuals. In the film, people not only metaphorically lose a part of themselves but also carry with them every past relationship.

The various foreign body parts symbolise the transformative impact of relationships and the changes they bring about in individuals. The central theme of the film is self-image: the protagonist sees themselves as a freak, preventing them from fully thriving in new relationships. They long for their original, complete self until one day they spot someone with their former ear – a symbol of their first breakup and their once unblemished self. This encounter sets them on a journey of self-acceptance, helping them realise that it is precisely the many “foreign” body parts they’ve acquired throughout their life that make them truly who they are and whole.
