A European Social Design Network has been Created by MOME
The internationally unique Social Design Network (SDN), initiated by the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, was launched on 20th October, 2020. The scheme involves 11 prestigious partner universities sharing knowledge and training socially sensitive designers and creative professionals by shared research, projects and courses.
Design as a creative industry is subject to significant changes. The challenges of the 21st century, such as climate change, migration, and the rapidly developing economy and technology, are demanding in this field. We must reconsider the role of design.
The first Social Design Network was created by the Social Design Research Group at the MOME Innovation Center (IC) in October 2020, involving 11 partner universities. The network’s objective is a mutual support system and co-thinking by gathering higher education institutions with the same mindset, all dealing with social design. For this reason, a broader interpretation of social design practice was a key aspect when selecting the institutions.
The aim of social design is to tackle the complex issues of the 21st century with the help of design methodologies, to set up new social values, processes, techniques, and to design useful items through participative and creative problem-solving methods. With this approach, designers might be shapers and helpers of the changes in the world around us. This is the concept behind the global initiative connecting 8 countries and 11 universities in the field of social design. The aim is to share knowledge and to train socially sensitive designers and creative professionals by shared research, projects and courses.
Over the course of the first meeting, the 11 universities introduced their own social design definitions and practice, together with the sociocultural environment in their area. A further ambition of the network is to establish a shared support system, financed by the European Union, which is to be launched at the beginning of 2021.
The creative work of MOME has always been characterized by the combination of social responsibility, technological opportunities, economic tools and environmental resources. “In the ever-changing and challenging period ahead of us, it is our professional duty to expand the fields of design, and to explore new ways of collaboration. During the climate crisis, social, ecological, economic and cultural sustainability go hand in hand with innovation. Thus, the dissemination of the advancing social design – which involves different and diverse goals, contexts and perspectives – is a common cause, the key for our future”, pointed out József Fülöp DLA, Rector of MOME.
That is why the freshly formed Social Design Network is so important to MOME. This unique, internationally acknowledged project, which consists of professionals of the same mindset, makes it possible to stand up for the unquestionable significance of the social responsibility of design in and out of Europe.
