360° Vision: Korean-Hungarian student hackathon at MOME

Date: 2025.04.08
The Immersive Beats: 360-degree music video joint hackathon explores the intersections of technology, art, and theoretical research. Organised by MOME’s Media Design programme and Korea's Chung-Ang University, this six-day event brings together Hungarian and South Korean students to fuse music, artificial intelligence, and immersive film technologies. Using AI tools, participants will create unique 360° music videos, blending creativity and cutting-edge technology. Beyond being a creative experiment, this project marks a significant milestone in fostering long-term international collaboration.

What makes this initiative particularly special is the involvement of Prof. Dr. Wi Jong Hyun, who decided to return to MOME after his visit last year – this time bringing his students along. Prof. Hyun was deeply inspired by the work of MOME's Media Design programme, and a strong professional bond has developed with Head of Programme Attila Pálfalusi.

The work of Dean of the Virtual Convergence College at Chung-Ang University Prof. Hyun is particularly exciting for MOME’s Media Design programme due to his dedication to interdisciplinarity and experience-based learning. As a globally recognised researcher of virtual reality and computer graphics, his work is shaping technological and educational innovation. In one of his landmark studies, Learning Representation of Secondary Effects for Fire-Flake Animation, he modelled the secondary effects of fire using neural networks, taking the realism of animation to the next level. He also plays a pioneering role in the development and application of game-based learning (G-Learning) methodologies, particularly in mathematics and English language teaching.

The hackathon will begin with inspirational visits to the House of Music, Hungary followed by intensive workshops at the MOME campus. The event will conclude on 9 April at the House of Music, Hungary, where participants will showcase their original artworks in the Sound Dome.

As part of the programme, the Media Design and Virtual Convergence conference explored contemporary issues in digital art, artificial intelligence, and media theory, with a keynote lecture from Wi Jong Hyun PhD titled The Future of Immersive Media for Industry, Society, and Human Life

How can traditional folk art, its associated ancient craft techniques, and materials be reimagined through the lens of contemporary design? This is the central question explored by the Future Traditions programme, which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year and has become a defining component of the Fashion and Textile Design MA programme at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME). In 2024, the programme took place as part of the Hungarian-Turkish Cultural Season, with MOME students collaborating for a semester with Istanbul's Marmara University. The results of this collaboration will be showcased in an exhibition at the Hungarian Cultural Centre in Istanbul.
