Preserving Central Europe’s visual heritage in AI-based content creation

Date: 2025.10.02
On 12 September, the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design hosted the first academic forum bringing together university experts and producers from the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, and Slovakia specialising in visual culture to explore how AI-generated visual content is shaping the region’s cultural landscape.

The spread of new technologies has prompted both academic and industry stakeholders to develop widely differing future strategies. The symposium sparked lively debate between researchers and practitioners on the cultural and ethical implications of synthetic media.

Participants set out to understand why the region’s visual heritage cannot yet be represented with sufficient accuracy in AI-generated imagery. They agreed that the scarcity of digitised museum and private collections across Central Europe prevents image generators from producing authentic and reliable visuals. As a result, users wishing to explore the region’s culture can only generate synthetic images that distort its characteristic folk costumes, art history, architecture, and landscapes overall.

Recognising these challenges, experts have developed a new methodology aimed at creating more inclusive and ethically responsible AI tools capable of producing accurate visual representations of the region. The results of this work are expected to be available by the end of 2026.

MOME has been among the first universities to study how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of design, the creative process, and communication. In this vein, the university launched its weekly ModulAItor podcast in September, featuring MOME lecturers, researchers, and experts discussing transformation of the creative industries, education, and the interpretation of cultural heritage by AI. In each episode, guests address the possibilities and shifts brought about by the new technology, from craft and fashion to data visualisation, interaction design, law and ethics. The series is edited and hosted by lecturer and researcher at MOME Dr Brigitta Iványi-Bitter PhD, leading a research project on AI’s impact on cultural heritage. All five episodes are now available on Spotify and YouTube.
