The MAIII Collective makes its debut in Stockholm

Date: 2025.02.05
Every object carries a story, but do minimalist contemporary furniture pieces also tell a story, and if so, what is it? This question is explored by the Fragments collection making its debut at the Stockholm Furniture Fair, one of the largest furniture exhibitions in the world. The artists behind this collection are the members of the MAIII Collective, a group of recent graduates from the MOME Product Design master's programme. Their narrative objects will be featured in the Greenhouse section, which provides a platform for emerging designers to showcase their work.

The Fragments collection encourages contemplation: the furniture and functional objects reflect the generational traditions and values of the designers, narrating the search for the essence of their identity and sense of belonging, with the foundational concept revolving around the discovery of knowledge, customs, and stories passed down from previous generations, as well as the desire to pass these on to the next generations.

The pieces include a set of tools for Christmas rituals, a birdhouse, a cobbler's chair, a modular display cabinet, a reinterpretation of a ‘komatál’ (traditional offering bowl), a serving set celebrating the tradition of family meals, a modern rethinking of a traditional wooden floating device, and a chair that carries the memory of family heirloom once hidden away in a secret drawer during the communist era.

These object-shaped stories are designed to provide shared connections for those who grew up in a similar environment, while also offering an insight to curious visitors into the world of traditions and memories that have shaped – and continue to shape – them. "Context is very important. When you tell the backstory, it adds an extra layer to the objects”, said the collective, who aim to engage visitors in a dialogue through their work.
