The University of the Future enters a new phase - the Senate has approved the implementation plan

The University of the Future initiative is a key focus this year, aimed at MOME’s comprehensive revitalisation. Thanks to persistent efforts over recent months, working groups have developed a detailed implementation plan for the University of the Future programme, a.k.a. the “Three Schools model”, which was unanimously accepted in December 2023. The process has now reached a new milestone: on 18 July, the Senate has pledged its support for the plan, paving the way for continued collaborative work to implement the new structure by next winter and to transform MOME into one of Europe's leading design higher education institutions.

As part of the model change, the Foundation for the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design had asked the university community to develop a 21st-century education model, the "University of the Future 2025-2045", aligned with the new era and international ambitions of the institution. The implementation plan defines the manifestos, educational approaches and goals, personas, training structures, and general curricula for the three schools. The model will be implemented in several phases during the new rector’s term: by autumn 2024, the legal and regulatory frameworks needed to transform the organisational structure from January 2025 will be in place. To launch the new educational model in September 2025, next year will require intensive work and adherence to strict deadlines. 

  

“Nearly one hundred people have been and continue to be involved in the University of the Future project, including students, teachers, staff, external professionals, and foreign experts – mostly designers and creative artists. This is an exemplary participatory design and internal development project truly based on the collaboration and collective thinking of the entire community. The twelve working groups set up are working to transform the university's educational and organisational structure and governance system, which will affect the institution's overall operations. We will keep the university community continuously informed about interim results to maximise transparency. The entire implementation process is characterised by continuous community dialogue, feedback, and consultations, ensuring community control and support. Our goal is for everyone to feel a sense of ownership in the University of the Future", said implementation lead Lili Érmezei.

The Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) continues its forest-planting initiative, with MOME students and staff planting a new forest in the Vízvár area in collaboration with experts from the Danube-Drava National Park on 14 to 16 November. The action will be preceded by professional events at MOME’s Budapest Campus, starting on 12 November with a lecture by biomimicry researcher Yael Helfman-Cohen from Tel Aviv, followed by biologist and Head of WWF Hungary’s Forest Programme Dr. László Gálhidy on 13 November.

Celebrated graphic artist and designer of the iconic Zoom, István Bányai was a defining figure in the history of press and magazines. Known for his work with The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, New York, and Playboy, he would have turned 75 this year. To honour his legacy, his alma mater, the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME), will present a selection of his work in an exhibition this November, offering a contemporary perspective on his oeuvre for the first time in Hungary.

“A piece from which its owner can draw strength" – this is how designer Bálint Szalai described the new Highlights of Hungary award trophy, co-designed with fellow designer Adrienn Király as the prestigious event marks the beginning of its second decade this year. This year’s recipients were the first to hold the new trophy, while the Kreatív Magazine special award was presented to MOME senior lecturer and designer of the Your Nature collection Apol Temesi. All three designers are proud MOME alumni who remain closely connected to their alma mater.
