Family and Neighbours in Magdolnanegyed by András Balázs I Book launch

The book launch of lecturer at MOME Institute for Theoretical Studies András Balázs’s book, published back in 2021 entitled Family and Neighbours in Magdolnanegyed will take place on 11 May at 5:00 p.m. at the Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Book presentation and discussion with the author by: Sociologist BALÁZS KRÉMER

A brief introduction of the book:

“I have been to many slums across the country both privately and a researcher. There I was faced with the fact that despite theoretically having equal rights, a large section of our compatriots is excluded from society on account of their ethnic origin and skin colour. It was easy to realise that there is no path leading to middle class existence from the most backwards villages and towns in regions devastated by unemployment. What was more difficult to grasp was how and why the losers of the change of regime are being trapped by the most destitute tenement buildings of Middle Józsefváros. This book demonstrates, through the social relationships and spatial movements of poor Roma families in Magdolnanegyed, what the neighbourhood where they live means to them.”

The MOME Doctoral School kindly invites you to Ágnes Karolina Bakk's dissertation defense.

What do we need to make things work? A lot has changed over the past few decades. Some things have improved considerably, while some, we feel, have gone off the rails. What is the best strategy to deal with the latter: should suffer, fix, replace or recreate them? What changes have the concept of resilience undergone since it was coined 50 years ago?
