Born in Kecskemét, the versatile artist graduated from the 1975 Hungarian College of Applied Arts as a graphic designer. In the 1970s he worked as a set designer, among others for the Katona József Theatre in Kecskemét before joining the Pannonia Film Studio, where he made his first solo animation film Silence in 1977 directed, written, and animated by him. He has over 20 films under his belt as a director.
A prominent figure of Hungarian poster art, he founded the poster artist collective D.O.P.P. in 1986 with Kristóf Ducki, Sándor Pincehelyi and Péter Pócs. His graphics focus on the use of spatial illusions, anamorphosis. His rich literary work includes collections of poems, short stories, and essays, as well as the murder mystery The Ambassador and the Pharaoh published in 2011 and the novel Chess Game on the Island published in 2017.
His art gained recognition both at home and internationally, and he is a regular at art exhibitions, graphics biennales, film festivals, and theoretical symposia. He is professor emeritus of the University of Sopron, guest teacher of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, and a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), an international organisation representing graphic designers and designers.
The event will also include screening and in-depth glimpse into Orosz’s life journey, including where the nickname Utisz used since 1984 comes from and what it means, and which of his artworks were included in the permanent collection of Tate Modern in London.
