Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design
University of the Future
What is the ‘University of the Future’? It is an ambitious and transformative process involving the MOME community reinventing and rebuilding itself from the ground up in preparation for the challenges of the coming decades. In doing so, MOME seeks to deliver credible responses to the demands of the 21st century while addressing the needs of future generations.
To achieve this, the ‘University of the Future’ initiative will foster greater interdisciplinarity, encouraging collaboration across programmes and fields while offering increased flexibility in learning pathways. Beyond the mastery of specific creative professions, the education provided will also focus on enhancing cultural literacy, nurturing creative responsibility, and empowering students to actively tackle key social and ecological issues. In parallel, personalised mentoring and university-wide community building will take on an even more central role in the future.
The ‘University of the Future’ is an initiative of the Foundation for Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, designed and implemented by the MOME community.
News
The University of the Future initiative is a key focus this year, aimed at MOME’s comprehensive revitalisation. Thanks to persistent efforts over recent months, working groups have developed a detailed implementation plan for the University of the Future programme, a.k.a. the “Three Schools model”, which was unanimously accepted in December 2023. The process has now reached a new milestone: on 18 July, the Senate has pledged its support for the plan, paving the way for continued collaborative work to implement the new structure by next winter and to transform MOME into one of Europe's leading design higher education institutions.
MOME is undergoing an unprecedented transformation, rethinking the challenges of future design education while building on its 144-year legacy. The University of the Future model aims to develop a sustainable, future-proof, and resilient strategy. We spoke with two key figures driving this change: landscape architect, sustainability expert, Vice Rector for Strategy, and professional lead of the University of the Future project Dániel Barcza, and strategist and organisational psychologist leading the implementation Lili Érmezei. They discussed the development process, major challenges, and the requirements to ensure the sustainability of the university’s vision in the long run.
What and how can we study at MOME in ten or even twenty years? How can the university remain up-to-date and provide answers to the pressing challenges of the century, and the needs of the future? The Foundation for the Moholy-Nagy University of Arts and Design asked the university community to develop a 21st-century education model, the ‘University of the Future 2025-2045’, in line with the international ambitions of the institution, as part of the model change. At the MOME Senate meeting in early December, the programme was approved by the Senate of the University without abstention or dissent, with 100% of the votes, representing an unprecedented level of support in the history of the institution.
