My goal for the design was to create a growth medium – an algae farm – that can be optimally integrated into urban settings and modern cuisine.
An item set for harvesting and processing was added to the growth unit to create a toolkit for immediate use of the algae throughout its entire growth cycle.
The resulting item set includes 5 pieces, made chiefly from glass that provides the necessary conditions for the growth of the algae (light transmittance, water retention).
Each piece in the set (the capped growth unit, airing unit, filter, draining unit, rack) serves a different purpose, from the continuous growing of the algae culture for a period of 8 to 12 months and filtering to refining the consistency of and drying the filtrate.
