Our teacher Péter Bence Simon won first prize in the Typography category of the Brands and Communication Design section of the Red Dot Award. His award-winning TYPO LANTERNS poster was commissioned by the KECD (Korea Ensemble of Contemporary Design) on the theme of ‘Beautiful Seoul’. It was also included in the annual year book of the prestigious New York-based design publisher Graphis Poster Annual available from summer 2024 and received a Silver Award.
According to his own account, the artist was inspired by a local festivity.
In his words, “While looking for a visual experience that characterizes and distinguishes the Seoul region from other modern cities, the spectacular cavalcade of Seoul Lantern Festival was the strongest and most impressive one.
In a Buddhist tradition, houses, streets, and temples in South Korea are hung with lit lanterns during the Seoul Lantern Parade. The curved, spherical bodies of the lanterns, hung closely next to and above each other, nearly blocked out my entire field of vision. The poster is a reflection of this cavalcade using the means of typography.”
