This complex educational programme for improving self-awareness uses art education to promote self-reflection and healthy self-esteem among high school students.

The theoretical research underlying the project was conducted as part of the ÚNKP call, entitled The Possibilities of Art Education in Developing Self-Awareness in High School”. The research explored the developmental psychological and social psychological aspects of the target group based on contemporary social dynamics and my teaching experience of four years.

I provide examples and research to support the notion that art and art education have the potential to shape both the individual and, consequently, society — echoing Beuys' theory of social sculpture. As a result, Visual Education should take on the responsibility of supporting the mental health of its participants, even in a form incorporated into the curriculum.

The 30-hour programme, which is also the subject of my thesis, can be used as an extracurricular activity or incorporated into the curriculum. The focus on fine arts does not determine the composition of the participants, only the quality of the results.

“The most important thing is for the child to understand: this class is not about art, it is about them!”  — István Bodóczky on visual education
